Chapter Twenty-Two

Raven

It felt strange, watching Dylan drive away with Noah on Saturday morning. Raven’s emotions were on a roller coaster—and not just because she hadn’t been able to stop thinking about that kiss. In fact, that was pretty much all she’d been able to think about.

It had been at once tender and hot. Gentle and passionate. Not a kiss of anger, hurt, betrayal, and revenge, but one of slow, deliberate intent that had gone far deeper than surface attraction or garden-variety lust.

Or maybe that was just her.

Oh, there was definitely an attraction there. There always had been. But how deep did it go? Did Dylan see her and Noah as a package deal? And if he did, would it be so bad? She tried to imagine Dylan being a part of Noah’s life while pursuing romantic endeavors elsewhere and felt a tight, squeezing pressure in her chest as a result.

Blowing out a breath, she poured herself another cup of coffee and did what she always did when she began to feel overwhelmed—she focused on Noah and what was best for him.

Having Dylan in his life was a good thing. Raven could teach him lots of things, but Dylan could relate to Noah and guide him in ways she couldn’t. Noah could benefit from having a man in his life, especially a man like Dylan.

So could she, if she was honest with herself.

And just like that, there she was, thinking about that kiss again.

“You know it was more than that, don’t you?”

That was the problem. It had been for her.

Did she need a man? No. She’d already proven that. She’d made a career for herself and a good life for her and Noah without anyone’s help.

But that kiss!

Gah!

She changed gears completely, wrenching her thoughts away from Dylan and the inexplicable power he had to commandeer her attention, and concentrated instead on the packet Mr. McAlister had given her. That would require her full attention. If anything could put a damper on hopeful thoughts and imagined possibilities, scores of pages written in legalese would do it.

She moved to the library, the dark and foreboding ambience appropriate for the task at hand, and took the seat behind her father’s desk.

“All right, Dad. Let’s see just how mad you were.”

She took a deep breath, broke the seal, and extracted the contents. The legal terms and conditions were there, as expected. The letter-sized envelope addressed to her in her father’s scratchy, flowing script was a surprise.

Intrigued, she opened the smaller envelope first and pulled out a short letter and a tiny key.
